The Prince and I have a new Saturday ritual: we visit Battens Farmer's Market, 5151 SW 64th Ave., Davie, FL 33314. The market is affiliated with the North South Institute at Nova University and has a mission to help local farmers in Dade and Broward counties.
We love it! Bring your own bags and choose from a wide array of locally grown fruits and vegetables. Produce not in season here is shipped in and also available. They have a special organic section too! The prices are very good.
Free samples of nature's bounty are plentiful, as well as free coffee! There is "Italian Caribbean" take-out, which offers creative lunch specials as well as jerk-chicken and pork, made on the premises. The Prince loves the home-made fruit smoothies, which is his reward for enduring the shopping experience.
Also for sale are many fruit preserves, spice rubs, and other pantry staples made in Florida.
There is a small petting zoo behind the market, with a donkey, turkey, geese, chickens, goats and rabbits. The market also sponsors free kids' cooking classes on the third Saturday of each month at the North South Institute (call 954-434-8220 for information).
Check it out! On Saturday, November 19, they will be having a Fall Festival from 9AM until 9PM, admission is free.
Batten's Market is closed on Wednesdays, but open every other day during the fall, winter, and spring.
